Basic Baby Bonnet

This hat was designed for beginning knitters in a church youth group for a social service project. More advanced knitters may wish to use the stockinette stitch.

Yarn: one skein 4 ply yarn (main color), one skein 4 ply yarn (contrast color, if desired), 1 yard narrow ribbon
Gauge:4sts=1inch
Knitting Needles: US #8

Instructions:
Cast on 48 sts with main color
Row 1: knit
Row 2: knit
Repeat rows 1 and 2

If a second trim color is desired, tie in contrast colored yarn to make stripes.

Continue in garter stitch until piece measures 7 inches. Bind off all stitches. Finishing: Fold the rectangular piece in half to form a square. With a yarn needle, sew the cast-on edge together from the fold to the corner. Fold the cast-off edge back over the cap to form a one-inch trim edge. Stitch ends of folded trim to the hat at the ends.

Pom pom: Wrap contrast yarn around a 2-inch piece of cardboard about 40 to 50 times. Gently slide yarn off the cardboard and tie the middle together tightly. Clip loop ends and trim evenly to make a fuzzy ball. Attach it to the point to the hat.
