Cowl Sizing

A child's cowl typically ranges from 18 to 22 inches in circumference and 6 to 9 inches in height, with specific sizing varying based on age. 

Did you know that Cowls are preferred by schools and parents because they are safer on the playground.


For a smaller child (approx. 2-6 years)

  • Circumference: 19 to 20 inches
  • Height: 6 to 7 inches
  • Example: A "Child S" or "Toddler" size on many patterns 

For an older child (approx. 7-10 years)

  • Circumference: 20 to 21 inches
  • Height: 7 to 9 inches
  • Example: A "Child L" or "Child" size on many patterns 


For an Adult


28 inches long and 5.25 inches wide, to a circumference of 20–40 inches and a depth of 6–20 inches. The ideal length can also be 30–35 inches in circumference for a standard cowl, while width varies based on personal preference and whether it's a single loop (12–24 inches) or a longer, doubled-back cowl.
