Join Jacey Bogs (founder and director of PLY, WEFT, and PURL magazines) and Karen Robinson (editor in chief of PLY and co-founder of PURL), for a candid retrospective on building a career and a publishing company from the ground up, starting with a secondhand spinning wheel and no formal training. This talk traces almost three decades of hands-on learning across spinning, weaving, and knitting, the lessons (and mistakes) that shaped each craft, and the collaborators and mentors who helped turn one magazine into three. This talk will take a personal look at building a fiber business rooted in curiosity, craft, and community.
Jacey Boggs loves fiber and has spent almost three decades of her life helping other people love fiber. She learned to spin on a secondhand wheel she bought off eBay, has taught spinning all over the world, once paid off a house with a yarn called Vitreous Humor, and started a publishing company by accident - now home to PLY, WEFT, and PURL magazines. She rock climbs, has three wonderful kids, and spins, knits, and weaves every day. She lives in Portland, Oregon.
Karen Robinson has been knitting for over twenty years, spinning for over fifteen, and was an indie dyer and knitting designer for a time. She has self-published two knitting pattern books, Gawain's Shield and Parliament of Cowls and is passionate about helping knitters understand the construction of yarn so they can make informed choices when choosing yarn for projects. She's a voracious reader, mostly of fantasy and science fiction, and has a full household with a husband, a teenager, three Boston Terriers, and two cats.
