Workshop: Portuguese Style Stranded Knitting with Andrea Wong

Monday November 11, 2024

1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Registration will open October 2nd, 2024

Topic:

Students will learn how to do stranded knitting using the Portuguese Style of Knitting. If they had never learned this style, they are still welcome to the class. Preference is that they have worked stranded knitting before. We are going to learn how to purl and how to control tension with both right and left hand running the yarn around the neck (or knitting pin). Once they are comfortable purling around, we are going to introduce a second color. For the more adventurous knitters, we might introduce a third and fourth color as well. To reinforce learning of new skills we are going to knit a two-color hat.

Skill Level: Be familiar with knitting basics skills. Stranded colorwork experience is preferred but not required.

Supplies: worsted weight yarn in 2 or 3 contrasting colors. Needles size US 7 or 8 of students preference. Basic knitting tools: scissors, stitch markers, tapestry needle, paper and pen for notes.

For project Victoria Hat2 skeins of Creme by Crystal Palace Yarns (60% wool, 40% silk - 50 g/124 yards [115 m] each): Color A, # 01 off white, and Color B, # 20 charcoal (or colors of preference) OR any yarn that gives 18 sts and 28 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch; one 16 inches circular needle US # 7 (4.5 mm), one set of double pointed needles same size (or size to obtain gauge).

Teacher Supplied Material and fee (optional):  knitting pin for U$5.00 each (for this class I suggest two), pattern for hat.

Homework:  Using one 16 inches circular needle US # 7 (4.5 mm) and MC, cast on 96 sts. Join it and work 10 rounds in Rib 1X1.

Location: Holiday Inn Express, 610 John Nolen Drive, Madison, WI
