Learn Steeking!
Steeking is the process of cutting a garment that you have knit in the round in order to create an opening in the fabric. The opening can be the front of a cardigan or an armhole.
In this class you will learn the crochet chain method of securing the stitches in the steek, cutting the steek, and how to pick up the stitches.
While knowing how to crochet is not a requirement for this class, a familiarity with single crochet is very helpful.
Homework:
Using a worsted weight yarn, 100% wool (do NOT use superwash), cast on 48 stitches using a US 8 (5mm) needle. Join and knit in the round, placing marker. Knit in stockinette until tube is 5 inches when measured from cast on.
Bind off, block lightly.
Note on Yarn: a smooth yarn, such as Cascade 220 or Brown Sheep Nature Spun works especially well for first time steeking. A fuzzy yarn or a yarn that is lighter (i.e. sport weight) can make the process more difficult.
Supplies for Class:
bring your knit tube!
tapestry needle
Set of US8 (5mm) dpns
Approximately 3 yards of 100% wool yarn in a contrasting color, yarn should be lighter then worsted weight (Sport weight works well. I will have extra, if you do not have this).
sharp pointed scissors
stitch markers
crochet hook, size E or F
