Are you one of those knitters who thinks she/he cannot do math?  Confused about using yarn with a different gauge than called for in the pattern?  Or a different stitch pattern?  Or want to modify that pattern to adjust for a smaller/bigger/longer/shorter body part?  Want to be able to figure out in advance how big is this thing going to be anyway?

We’ll go through some basic math to understand the concepts and make it easy, then apply it to your knitting.  If you have a specific problem or pattern you’d like to use to apply the math, bring it to class.  If you have a specific question or problem you want to make sure we cover, email it to me at least one week ahead – maryehamel@gmail.com

Required advance work:

Homework: You should knit 2 swatches in 2 very different weights of yarn, using needles appropriate for each yarn type.  Strive for using needles at least 2 needle sizes apart.  For each swatch cast on 25 stitches and knit 20 rows in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row purl 1 row).  Cast off.  Block both swatches.

Supplies: Bring paper and pen/'pencil, calculator, your 2 swatches, ruler good for counting gauge, more of both types of yarn that you used for the swatches (light colors are easier to count and see so that is recommended), and needles, along with basic tools.  In addition, IF YOU WANT, you can bring in a pattern you would like to alter -- either by using a yarn of a different weight than called for by the pattern or by changing the sizing somehow.  I will bring a simple pattern you can use, but if you want to use one of your own, bring it along.

Experience level required: a wee bit more than beginner: be familiar with gauge, casting on, binding off, knit, and purl.
