  • Zoom

Rebecca Burgess

The January 2022, meeting will be a joint meeting with the Madison Weaving Guild and the Warped and Weft Weavers of Woodstock, Illinois. The three organizations will welcome Rebecca Burgess, Executive Director of Fibershed. She has two decades of experience working at the intersection of ecology, fiber systems, and regional economic development. She is the author of the best-selling book Harvesting Color, a bioregional look in the natural dye traditons of North America, as well as Fibershed: Growing a Movement of Farmers, Fashion Activists, and Makers for a New Textile Economy.

Her presentation, Building Fibersheds, explores how communities across the United States and beyond that have traditionally been reliant upon exploitative textile systems are working at a grassroots level to develop place-based regional fiber and natural dye systems. These systems work to generate necessary forms  of material culture to regenerate lost carbon stocks in soils, provide meaningful livelihoods, develop new natural fiber and dye recipes, while consciously considering how to reduce pressure on highly polluted regions in the world.
