In Portuguese-style knitting the yarn is tensioned around a knitting pin on your shoulder or around your neck. Stitches are created by a flick of your thumb, making this an easy way to knit without stressing your hands or wrists.

Join instructor Mary Jo Harris, a local knitting designer, author, and active member of the Madison (WI) Knitters’ Guild, and learn about the history and advantages of Portuguese Knitting, how to purl, knit, bind off, and increase/decrease using the Portuguese method. She will show you how to make a scarf using the Portuguese method and share resources with you. Portuguese Knitting Pin and instructions provided.

Bring worsted-weight yarn (no novelty yarn) - one or two colors, either straight or circular needles in size appropriate for your yarn, and usual knitting accessories. Participants should know how to cast on, bind off, knit, and purl. Adults and youth (ages 12 and up with an adult); each participant pays the registration fee.

Limited space; register early. To register, please call (608)246-4550.
    Registration deadline: August 22

       WALK & KNIT RELAY

    Saturday, September 9 4pm

Join a team and extend your fun at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival

    ***Team registration closed 8/14**

There is still time to volunteer

    Contact Jane Grogan:janegro@yahoo.com

Sign up to get a spot on an official MKG team.  Cost is only $5 (members and non-members, no paypal surcharge)  You can find three friends and create your own team, or get a random assignment to a team.

Each team member will walk one lap (approximately 100 yards) while knitting in stockinette stitch on circular needles.

Team points are awarded based on the number of stitches knit and on the  time to walk the course and then points will be deducted for errors (dropped stitches, etc).

You do not need to be either a fast walker or fast knitter to participate.  You do need to like to have fun!

Besides being a source of great fun and laughter, this event raises money to fund wool activities at the Festival for kids.

If you like to have fun but don't want to do the walking & knitting, contact Jane Grogan (janegro@yahoo.com).  There are many "behind the scenes" opportunities.

Mark your calendar and plan to come watch the event.  Don't miss out on this fun!

    2017-2018 Bohus KAL (Knit-A-Long)

Mark your calendars for the KAL kickoff meeting on September 24, 2:00-4:00PM at the Fitchburg Library. More details will be available soon. Meanwhile, start shopping for a kit! If you have any questions about choosing or ordering a kit, please email me at KAL@madisonknittersguild.com.

This year’s Knit-Along (KAL) theme is Bohus knitting. Bohus designs are known for their finely knit, intricate, and beautiful color work. While the Bohus style is best known for the circular yoke sweater, there are also patterns for set-in sleeve sweaters, jackets, hats, scarves, mittens, and wristers. Yarns are either fine wool or an angora/wool blend in a rich color palette. There is a Bohus pattern to meet anyone’s color preference, style, or desired project size. The patterns are knit at a fine gauge, about 8.5 stitches per inch for the angora-blend yoke sweaters and 7.5 stitches per inch for the all-wool sweaters. The color patterns are stranded, differing from traditional Fair Isle in that some rows have more than two colors and contain purl stitches on the right side. The purl stitches pull color from other rows and add to the complexity and subtlety of the appearance of the color work.
